The Story Behind AM Design Spectrum

When a Simple Skill Becomes a Lifeline

AM Design Spectrum began with a moment of realization thousands of miles from home.

While visiting a hospital in India, the founder, Alice Kaneyia, spent time speaking with parents in the waiting areas. Many of them were incredibly educated, thoughtful, and capable women. Yet they all shared the same challenge.

Raising a child with autism requires constant care.

Because of that responsibility, many of these mothers were unable to pursue traditional employment, despite their education and talent.

That realization stayed with Alice long after she left.

It also reminded her of something she had seen growing up in Kenya.

Back home, many mothers raising children with autism faced similar challenges. The demands of caregiving meant traditional jobs were often impossible. Opportunities were limited, and financial independence was difficult to achieve.

Yet these women possessed something remarkable.

They knew how to create.

In many Kenyan communities, women weave beautiful baskets by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations. These baskets are often made during spare moments, something done for relaxation, creativity, or cultural tradition.

But rarely were these skills seen as a source of meaningful income.

Alice began to see the possibility.

What if something created for leisure could become something much more powerful?

What if the skill of weaving baskets could become a pathway to financial independence?

That question became the foundation of AM Design Spectrum.

The idea was simple but transformative:

Purchase handcrafted baskets directly from mothers raising autistic children and bring those products to a global market.

Something once seen as a pastime could become a marketable skill.

Something made quietly at home could become a source of dignity, stability, and opportunity.

Today, AM Design Spectrum works to connect these artisans with customers around the world who value craftsmanship, purpose, and impact.

Every basket tells a story of resilience, patience, and creativity.

But the mission reaches beyond Kenya.

AM Design Spectrum's long-term vision is to create a global ecosystem where mothers raising autistic children, especially in developing regions, can earn a sustainable income through their skills.

Because caregiving should never mean losing the opportunity to thrive.

And sometimes, the smallest ideas, a woven basket, a simple craft, can open the door to something far greater.
